Types of Fashion in Gaming

In games, it’s often that certain characters or locations will take inspiration from real life as opposed to it being fully fantasy. These games typically incorporate Japanese fashion as it is versatile in aesthetic and subculture.

Ouji Fashion

Ouji, literally meaning “prince” in Japanese, has a Victorian and young boyish look. This style can be worn by anyone, but has a lean towards more masculine presenting people, or people with short hair. The substyles of Ouji range from adding specific bright or dark colors or even certain accessories to obtain either a “sweet” or “gothic” look.

In the video game Genshin Impact, characters Furina and Xingqiu dress in the typical Ouji wear. Fontaine, a nation known for its fashion in the game, heavily takes inspiration from Japan with its clothing. Furina, a female character, sports Ouji in her outfit, proving the versatility of it regardless of gender. Xingqiu, in both his normal wear and skin from Fontaine have Ouji elements. Coincidentally, both characters have positions of nobility, further pushing the “prince” or royalty agenda it spreads.

Lolita Fashion

Opposite to the princely image, Lolita allows women to express themselves through doll-like clothing. It is hyper feminine and focuses on pieces such as bows, ruffles, and Mary Janes to be seen as a Lolita “coord” (short for coordinate), short for outfit.

In Genshin Impact, characters Kamisato Ayaka and Navia are both examples of Lolita coords. Navia, a character from Fontaine’s outfit, is decorated in bows and ruffles, alongside her hats having rose accents. Her transparent boots make it look like she is wearing stockings under heels, a typical Lolita look. Navia’s hair is also decorated with drills, a style with tightly curled hair. Drill hair is also used to represent a person’s higher status, which Navia does have.

Similarly, Kamisato Ayaka’s skin from Fontaine has ruffles and bows, but flower accents throughout her dress, stockings and hair accessories. Her hair is also done in looped braids, a popular Lolita style.

Games can draw inspiration from anywhere, or create a completely new identity for characters. Regardless, some themes of a game will include a cultural identity that will engage new players.
