Game Genres Across The Board

Games have different tactics for beating them. Some allow fighting to become the victor, while others depend on choices. Exposure to different genres of games allows for smooth gameplay.

Keep reading to learn about game genres across the board.

First-Person Shooter

First-person shooter, or FPS, games are within a video game genre where players assume the protagonist’s viewpoint. From the character’s perspective, players view the game’s surroundings in the first person. This limited perspective, excluding the full view of the character’s body, contributes to the realism of FPS games. Additionally, including sound effects like footsteps across terrain enhances this realism. Examples of FPS games include Valorant, Apex Legends, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Role-Playing Game

A role-playing or RPG is a video game where the player controls a character’s decision-making, exploration, and combat. In an RPG, choices affect the way a story progresses, providing alternate actions or endings. Through exploration, players can unlock quests or quest items. By engaging in combat, players may receive drops from enemies that allow them to upgrade their character, further encouraging them to fight harder enemies. Examples of RPG games are Final Fantasy, Persona, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Otome Game

An otome game focuses on the romantic development of the female player and her male love interests. Derived from the Japanese word for “maiden,” otome games are marketed toward women. They adopt a visual novel format, enabling players to read characters’ dialogue and other important text. Romantic interest development hinges entirely on player decisions. Gacha, akin to toy vending machines, provides randomized in-game items beyond the romantic aspect. These items unlock additional character content and can be leveled up for combat optimization. Progression in combat allows players to advance in the story, unlocking further interactions with their love interests. Examples of otome games include Tears of Themis, Love and Deepspace, and Obey Me!.

Different genres give people their unique wants. If people prefer more action or plot-based games, finding the game with just the right amount of either or both provides the player with enjoyable content.
