The popularity of video games (or lack thereof) should not be an indication of its quality. Several great niche games have been released in the 2020-2021 period. Despite their quality, because the targeted audience, they receive a small viewership. Even so, they still deserve recognition.
Here are the top five high-quality niche games from the 2020-2021:
#5 – Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX was released for the Nintendo Switch in March of 2020. It is a remake of Pokémon Red, Rescue Team, and Pokémon Blue Rescue Team for the Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS, respectively.
This game has beautiful graphics that look like a living painting which makes the gameplay aesthetic. There’s a simple but emotional story and straightforward gameplay that involves exploring various dungeons.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX was hardly marketed but is definitely worth checking out.
#4 – Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory
Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory was released for the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch in November of 2020. It was also ported to the PC in early 2021. This challenging rhythm game celebrates the music of the Kingdom Hearts series as a whole. It also teases what happens next as its characters’ adventures continue in subsequent titles.
Melody of Memory is an enjoyable title for longtime fans of this Disney/Square Enix hybrid. Though, it’s also an excellent way for newcomers to enjoy the franchise, as well.
#3 – Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity was another video game released for the Nintendo Switch in November of 2020 that somehow managed to slip under everyone’s radar. This is an excellent single-player experience that boasts gorgeous visuals, a catchy soundtrack, and even a powerful story despite its status as a spinoff title.
With several different characters to choose from while progressing through the story, this prequel of sorts to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is getting some DLC updates later this year and is worth looking into.
#2 – Marvel’s Avengers
It’s surprising how little marketing there was for Marvel’s Avengers, given the characters’ significance in comic book history and the popularity of films made by Marvel Studios. That said, this game for the PlayStation 4 has just been upgraded for the PlayStation 5 and puts the powers of everyone’s favorite superheroes right in the palm of their hand.
It has both a single-player story mode and multiplayer functions, and it also allows for a great deal of customization. Avengers is updated periodically, has a bright future ahead of it, and should be given the chance at success it deserves.
#1 – Final Fantasy VII Remake
Originally released for the PlayStation 4 in April of 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake is about to make a huge comeback next month when it relaunches on PlayStation 5 as Final Fantasy VII Remake -Intergrade-. It is even going to have an exclusive DLC episode chock full of amazing content.
People who did not pick up the game before should definitely try it now; it is a masterpiece in all its aspects, from story to gameplay, to its soundtrack.
Conclusion
These are just some of the high-quality niche games released that did not have a chance to shine. Their shared status as a niche game means they are often dismissed as lower-quality by the general gaming community. This assumption about them is false and harmful. Anyone looking for something new and enjoyable to play this summer should consider giving one of these titles a chance.
