Dating Sims and LGBTQ+ Inclusion

Dating simulators are popular, especially as more inclusive games are developed. Dating sims and LGBTQ+ is a growing market as more games provide the ability to seek out any character, regardless of gender and sexuality. LGBTQ+ inclusion wasn’t consistently demonstrated in the gaming community. Understanding why representation matters and the benefits these games provide is essential when considering the future of dating sims.

LGBTQ and The Gaming Community

The first known example of an LGBTQ+ game was in 1989, and developed by CM Ralph. Caper in the Castro introduced representation of the LGBTQ+ community by making the character gamers play as, a lesbian. Since then representation has broadened as some games are for the LGBTQ+ community specifically, and other games cater to all by making no limitations based on gender and sexuality.

Why LGBTQ+ Representation in Dating Sims Matters

Representation matters regardless of which community it features. When playing games, many enjoy creating a character that looks and acts like them, but if there are limitations to gender and sexuality, that can prevent many from doing the same. When creating a game, it’s important to remember that many gamers are part of the LGBTQ+ community. In 2020, Nielsen Games study showed that ten percent of all gamers are in the LGTBQ+ community.

With a significant number of gamers falling into this category it’s important to ensure representation is fair and present. A ten percent loss for gaming companies can be significant, especially for newly developed companies. The most substantial reason for representation is allowing an individual to truly feel as themselves while gaming.

The Benefits On The LGBTQ Community

Inclusion and representation benefits the intended group by allowing them to connect with the game, characters, and feel more immersive in the experience. Having games normalize LGBTQ+ relationships, and dating sims where gamers can explore relationships can help in better understanding ones sexuality.

For many discovering their sexuality can be confusing and difficult to process. Having games where exploring different sexualities allows for some to get a better understanding of their identities. Also, the more representation that is shown the less likely LGBTQ+ youth, and others trying to understand themselves may feel less alone and more included.

In general, many games continue to branch out to include many underrepresented communities. While LGBTQ+ individuals may have seen representation in certain games, most focused only on heterosexual relationships. Allowing gamers to indulge in games like dating simulators and experience different relationships without limitation provides a more inclusive experience and may help with self-identity.
