4 Gaming Trends from 2022

With gaming becoming more and more popular it’s important to keep a close eye on trends within the industry. Gaming trends such as streaming and Virtual Reality may not be so surprising when you consider recent innovations within the tech industry meanwhile other trends such as the metaverse and blockchains may be more shocking.

Regardless, the new trends within the industry are important to take note of when thinking about the future of gaming.

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual Reality has been on the rise for the past few years. VR has been an innovation within the gaming industry before others, such as real estate agents, museums, and even the military started using it. There have been a variety of social business uses such as exposure therapy with simulations.

Games such as Minecraft and Skyrim have come out with VR versions of their games. Companies such as Microsoft, Sony, and even Apple are developing and releasing their own VR systems. Thankfully, VR headsets are becoming more affordable for gamers to acquire.

The Metaverse

If you’ve been keeping up with tech news, it’s likely you’ve heard of the metaverse. Facebook and Microsoft have plans for their own metaverses which can create immersive worlds that can be used for many purposes. In-game worlds can hold events such as concerts like Ariana Grande’s Fortnight concert or Lil Nas X’s Roblox concert.

COVID-19 has shown how easy it is to interact with others virtually. It’s no wonder the metaverse and platforms like it are appearing. The metaverse could easily become everyone’s virtual workplace or hangout space.

Gaming as a Sport (Esports)

Like many things, Esports boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic. 73 million people tuned in to watch the 2021 World Championship of League of Legends. This was a 60% increase from the championship in 2020. The viewership number is expected to rise in 2022. Esports will also make their official debut in the 2022 Asian Games.

Gaming has evolved past the nerdy, slackers, and 12-year-old boys stereotypes that plagued it in the past. With the rise in esports popularity, esports may have a national league of their own.

Cloud Gaming

Cloud gaming is a fairly new concept but an important one. It’s widely accepted to buy a new console every few years. Then, there are the game updates. Some may be exciting and add new bosses, events, and characters, others can be non-eventful bug fixes.

With either option, you could be waiting for a few minutes up to an entire day while your game updates. Cloud gaming stops this and makes a computer or mobile device and a good internet connection all you need for gaming. The old gaming systems may never go away but gaming would be easier than ever with a cloud data center.

There are plenty of people trying to make this a regular part of gaming, so keep an eye out in 2022.

Conclusion

These trends are just a few new things that have influenced the gaming industry. See what’s out there and you might stumble across a really cool addition to try. Keep in store for what’s to come next year.
