With lots of famous heterosexual singers creating love songs, people within the LGBT community have sought out singers from their background to create music they can relate to. Luckily, many new and old voices have entered the industry, creating music which gives power to their community. Some older voices have created waves within rock, many new artists have redefined pop and alternative music.
Here are three great singers to add to your playlist:
1. King Princess
King Princess is a newer artist who made waves with her single titled “1950.” The song is about a lesbian relationship and the secrecy that comes with it. During the 1950s, many gay and lesbian relationships were underground and kept quiet. This song gives homage to that era of LGBT history.
The song was included in the Netflix short film, “If Anything Happens I Love You.” Additionally, she appeared as a guest judge on the Netflix show “Is It Cake?”
Besides her short films, she has since released an album and been traveling to perform with other artists and at festivals.
2. Troye Sivan
Troye Sivan started his career on YouTube as a vlogger and transitioned into music after finding success from singing competitions. He has a very successful first album which featured multiple songs dealing with same-sex relationships. Songs such as “For Him” and “Bloom” are very open about these relationships in a refreshing way.
While his original album, “Blue Neighborhood,” has been out for a couple years, he has since collaborated with other big names within the music industry. Sivan, like King Princess, has made some acting debuts such as a role within the 2018 film, Boy Erased. His music has also been included in many different film/television soundtracks.
3. Kim Petras
Kim Petras is a notable trans singer who started as an independent artist. She released her first single which managed to rank highly across multiple charts. She then signed onto a label and has since released two studio albums, “Turn Off The Light” and “Clarity.”
Petras has found success with multiple singles such as “Coconuts,” “I Don’t Want It at All,” and “Unholy.” The last of the three is her latest single which is a duet with another famous singer Sam Smith. The song gained traction upon having the chorus played as a sneak peek for the track.
